Position Summary

Assists the surgical team members in providing intraoperative care to the perioperative patient by preparing and monitoring equipment, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, assisting with patient transfer/positioning and performing a variety of surgical skills and procedures. Provides clinical support and serves as the expert resource and lead person within the service area. 


Education

High School Diploma or GED is required.

Associates degree in surgical technology is preferred.

 

Graduated or in route to graduate from a recognized surgical technology program or has successfully completed military training in surgical technology is required. Military documentation to establish education includes a DD214 demonstrating graduation from a military training program.

Illinois: High School Diploma or GED PLUS 3 years working as a Surgical Technologist working in healthcare setting may be considered in lieu of education.


Experience

2 years of experience in surgical services is required.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.

One of the following certifications is required: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) issued by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Tech in Surgery (TS-C) issued by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (for hires/transfers after June 2025).

Responsibilities

Meets surgeons on a regular basis to determine needs and preference card changes. Communicates effectively and efficiently with surgical staff and surgeons. 

Assigns and coordinates daily schedule and workflow of the department. Staffs surgeries appropriately. Creates and maintains monthly call schedules.

Assists the surgical team members (surgeon, anesthesiologist, CRNA, perfusion, circulator) in providing intraoperative care to the perioperative patient by preparing and monitoring equipment, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, assisting with patient transfer/positioning and performing a variety of surgical skills and procedures.

Under the direct observation supervision of the supervising surgeon: placement of retractors; suctioning, irrigation and sponging of surgical site; manipulation of suture materials, applying tourniquets, vessel loops, and non-crushing clamps, apply wound dressings, absorbent material affixed with tape or ace bandages, immobilizing dress (shoulder immobilizer).

Assists in preparation and positioning of patient according to need. Demonstrates the capability of using reasonable initiative and judgement, and the ability to apply principles of asepsis.

Assists other team members to ensure even distribution of workload and shares in assigned tasks.  Functions as a preceptor for staff as needed.

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of all sterilization procedures including the cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of equipment and supplies, as well as chemical and biological monitoring

Assists in accounting for all sponges, needles, and instruments during an operative procedure.  Ensures all equipment is in working order.

Assists with tracking inventory of supplies, processing new product requests, and  trials of new equipment and supplies. Monitors notification of reps and supplies requested.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
