Position Summary | Security Officer I's provide safety and security services to ensure the well-being of both people and property by patrolling assigned areas as needed, and enforcing rules and regulations. This role responds to all emergency requests and alarms, providing assistance and coordination. HSHS Security are often the first or last person our patients, visitors and colleagues encounter in our facilities. Therefore, Security Officer I's are expected to be professional and courteous, while balancing the challenges that occur while working in the hospital environment . | | | |
Education | High School Diploma, GED or related vocational training is required. | Associates degree in law enforcement, Criminal Justice or military service is preferred. |
Experience | One year of experience with knowledge of private security functions obtained through education or work experience such as military, public safety or fire department is preferred. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Valid state driver’s license and must be insurable to operate hospital vehicles is required. | Successfully complete the Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Certification within the first 90 days of employment is preferred (if utilized at the affiliate). |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Forms strong working relationships with hospital staff. | Possesses good customer service and communication skills. | Knowledge of healthcare environments such as what threats and vulnerabilities are present. | Demonstrates excellent judgment and decision-making skills and effective conflict management skills. | Maintains composure and self-control under pressure. | Demonstrates ability to maintain confidential information | Excellent collaboration and team building skills. |
Responsibilities | Performs routine patrols of hospital and HSHS properties by foot and vehicle as needed, including but not limited to checking and locking doors according to established schedule or as required by special circumstances. | Completes accurate and detailed reporting of any safety and/or security hazards. Enters accident/injury reports through the internal reporting system when appropriate. | Escorts patients, visitors, colleagues and others as requested. Assists motorist(s) and/or issue parking and/or trespassing violations, as needed. | Controls access to the campus and enforces HSHS policies related to safety and security. | Responds timely to emergency situations and assists where needed. | Manages verbally or physically aggressive situations with out injury to patients and staff, using verbal intervention and de-escalations skills, remaining calm, exercising judgment, and avoiding unnecessary physical force and abusive language. | Assists in managing the lost and found program. | Acts as a liaison with local law enforcement and other departments/colleagues. | Manages chain of custody of deceased patients. | Works closely with departments for transport service and releases to authorized recipients in accordance affiliate policies. | Interacts with the public and provides assistance, directions, or other instructions as needed. | Maintains awareness of high-risk patients in terms of potential threat to affiliate personnel and specific geographic areas defined as high-risk areas based on crime stats provided by appropriate police agencies or commonly known areas of concentrated criminal activity. | Assists in maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, including but not limited to performing risk assessments, fire extinguisher inspection, conducting fire drills and other safety inspections. | Assists in investigations and accurately prepares security notes and reports. |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Abides by all safety requirements including demonstrating proper hand hygiene and wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains ongoing communication and collaboration with team members. |
