Position Summary

Assists the physician with the performance of invasive and diagnostic/interventional cardiac, vascular, neuro and electrophysiology procedures, by monitoring, passing instruments and catheters, observing patient response to procedure, maintaining sterile field, and interpreting and evaluating diagnostic data to be utilized by the physician. Supports the education, training, quality improvement and research processes in the department and excels in a subspecialty area of expertise.


Education

High School Diploma or GED is required.

Completion of a certificate/training program or Associates degree in health sciences is preferred (including but not limited to cardiovascular technology, respiratory therapy, nursing, or emergency medical services).


Experience

4 years of cath lab or special procedures experience is required.

Cross-trained and able to rotate to perform at least four (4) functional skill sets as delegated in any diagnostic or interventional case type performed.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Certification as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) is required (for hires/transfers, including promotions/career progressions, after July 2023).

Candidates without RCIS/RCES certification may be considered if they have a minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in a cardiac catheterization lab and can demonstrate in-depth knowledge of invasive cardiology procedures, hemodynamic monitoring, sterile technique, and procedural support.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required.

Possesses a thorough knowledge of sterile techniques, instruments, catheters, cardiac arrhythmias, and hemodynamic waveform analysis.

Maintains a high degree of professionalism and maintains composure under pressure.   

Possesses a high degree of initiative, seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty.   

Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment.  


Responsibilities

Prepares the patient for the catheterization and passes instruments and catheters during the procedure.

Interprets arrhythmias and various pressure wave forms, calculates and interprets oxygen saturations.

Interprets and evaluates hemodynamic data and reports to the physician.

Operates a variety of complex equipment as delineated by achievement of competency.

Performs special skills and procedures requiring knowledge of sterile technique.

Ensures records are maintained on each patient and reported to the nursing unit receiving the patient.

Responsible for cleaning equipment, assuring maintenance when necessary and testing the equipment prior to actual usage for purposes of quality control.

Reports all unusual occurrences or problems to the charge person or facilitator in the absence of the manager.

Orders and maintains supplies.

Participates in the orientation, preceptorship, and mentoring of students, physicians and other staff as appropriate. Provides training and development to all cath lab personnel related to subspeciality area of expertise.

Serves as a resource person for physicians and staff for subspecialty area by consistently working to incorporate research related findings into standard practices; and by demonstrating the ability to trouble-shoot all subspecialty equipment used in the department.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
