Position Summary | Coordinates the processes related to charge data integrity, entry, and reconciliation. Responsibilities include: review of charge for completeness and accuracy, matching physician documentation of diagnosis with international classification of diseases (ICD) codes, sequencing of ICD codes and current procedural terminology (CPT) codes, accurate entry of the charge on the patient account, reconciliation of charge to data entry, and capturing of charges through the coding networks. | | | |
Education | High School Diploma or equivalent is required. | Associates degree in business or a healthcare related discipline is preferred. |
Experience | 3 years of experience as a medical coder is preferred. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Certification as Professional Coder by American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) is preferred. |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Demonstrates problem solving skills, collaboration and team building skills. | Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills, and performs work independently with minimal supervision. | Exposure to frequently fast paced office environment, requiring the ability to work under pressure of multiple requests and time constraints. | Demonstrated understanding of Medicare, health plan reimbursement guidelines, front office functions in a physician practice. | Knowledge of ICD charge master (CM), CPT, healthcare common procedure coding system (HCPCS) coding is preferred. |
Responsibilities | Coordinates all processes to ensure that accurate and timely charge entry and reconciliation for services are completed. | Uses resources to match provider documentation and numerical ICD CM codes. | Sequences ICD codes, CM codes and service CPT codes. | Follows up with appropriate personnel, as needed, to facilitate charge capture. | Utilizes regular reports to monitor charge capture. | Communicates effectively to facilitate information sharing and problem solving. |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Abides by all safety requirements including demonstrating proper hand hygiene and wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains ongoing communication and collaboration with team members. |
