Position Summary | Assists surgical team members in providing intraoperative care to the perioperative patient by preparing and monitoring equipment, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, assisting with patient transfer/positioning and performing a variety of surgical skills and procedures. | | | |
Education | High School Diploma or GED required. | Associates degree in surgical technology is preferred. | Graduate from a recognized surgical technology program or has successfully completed military training in surgical technology is required. Military documentation to establish education includes a DD214 demonstrating graduation from a military training program. | Illinois: High School Diploma or GED PLUS 3 years working as a Surgical Technologist working in healthcare setting may be considered in lieu of education. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. |

Responsibilities | Assists the surgical team members (surgeon, anesthesiologist, CRNA, perfusion, circulator) in providing intraoperative care to the perioperative patient by preparing and monitoring equipment, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, assisting with patient transfer/positioning and performing a variety of surgical skills and procedures. As directed by supervising surgeon: holds retractors, suctions, irrigates and sponges surgical site, cuts suture materials, measures and passes medications and hemostatic agents during surgical procedures. | Assists in preparation and positioning of patient according to clinical indications. | Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of all sterilization procedures including the cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of equipment and supplies, as well as chemical and biological monitoring. Demonstrates the capability of using reasonable initiative and judgement, and the ability to apply principles of asepsis. | Assists in accounting for all sponges, needles, and instruments during an operative procedure. Reports malfunctions of equipment immediately. | Assists other team members to ensure even distribution of workload and shares in assigned tasks. Functions as a preceptor for staff as needed. |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials. Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues. | Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work. Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care. Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process. Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements. |
