Position Summary | Conducts patient assessment and administers physician prescribed treatments, therapies, and procedures in accordance with policies and best practice guidelines under the direction of a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner. Monitors patient safety and response to treatments, therapies and procedures. Operates and maintains equipment, documents in the electronic medical record, and maintains the required level of competence in departmental policies and procedures, HIPAA standards, and quality assurance guidelines. | | | |
Education | Actively enrolled and in good standing in a Respiratory Therapy program or within 6 months post-graduation from a Respiratory Therapy program with pending licensure OR a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner without successful certification completion by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Basic Life Support (BLS) is required |

Responsibilities | Demonstrates competence in, and administers physician prescribed treatments, therapies, and procedures in accordance with policy and best practice guidelines under the direction of a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner. Examples include, but are not limited to nebulized medication delivery, oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, airway clearance, and EKG tracings. | Collaborates with patient, family and care team colleagues to development a patient care plan under the direction of a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner. Evaluates patients’ progress toward achievement of expected outcomes. Explains purpose and procedure of treatments, therapies, and equipment to the patient. | Collects and analyzes clinical data regarding the patient in a systematic and continuous manner under the direction of a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner. Documents and communicates findings to appropriate care providers. Assesses potential barriers to learning and adjusts educational styles accordingly. Documents all pertinent information of treatments and patient response per policy. | Checks equipment for proper function and cleanliness. Adheres to equipment maintenance procedures and schedules as outlined. | Assists with duties in Emergency Codes and Rapid Responses under the direct supervision of a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner. |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials. Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues. | Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work. Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care. Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process. Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements. |
