Position Summary

Performs patient care under the direction of a registered nurse. Greets, assists, and directs patients and visitors and monitors activity to establish a friendly caring environment. Provides care for patients according to the standards of care specific to age and the individual's needs. May collect blood samples and process specimens. Maintains a safe, clean, and well-equipped environment.


Education

High School Diploma, GED or related vocational training is required.


Experience

1 year healthcare experience is preferred.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required within 30 days upon hire.

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) or CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

Performs intravenous access as well as venipunctures and capillary punctures to collect blood samples based on competency, perform placement of indwelling Foley catheters and straight cauterization’s when needed to obtain urine samples under sterile technique.  May perform 12-lead electrocardiograms as directed; trained to collect specimens for COVID, RSV, and influenza; performs point-of-care testing, including blood glucose tests, rapid strep tests, i-STAT creatinine tests, and urine pregnancy tests.

Assist the nursing team in providing care to patients under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, including but not limited to obtaining vital signs and assist with ambulating and toileting patients within the department.

Assists providers with simple procedures and performs basic wound care, as well as splinting, bandaging, and placement of orthopedic devices.

Assist in the care of high-priority patients, including, but not limited to initial triaging of patients, strokes, codes, traumas, sepsis, and acute coronary symptom patients.

Answers call signals promptly to expedite delivery of patient care services and rounds on patients while reporting any acute findings in a closed loop communication with the nursing staff and providers.

Trained with using specialized equipment. Demonstrates competence when operating equipment with concern for patient safety. Assists in the care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

Transports patients throughout the hospital setting as directed; stocks patient care rooms, patient care carts, specialty carts, and linen cabinets within the department..

Trained in documenting appropriate information within the patient’s medical record, while preserving patient confidentiality.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
