Position Summary

The Cardiovascular Technician performs multiple non-invasive cardiovascular procedures for diagnosis under the order and through the interpretation of a physician. Conducts test on pulmonary or cardiovascular systems of patients for diagnostic purposes.


Education

High School Diploma or GED is required.


Experience

1 year of experience as a Cardiovascular/EKG Technician is preferred.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Certification as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is preferred.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.

Responsibilities

Conducts cardiovascular tests to record patients' cardiac activity, using specialized electronic testing equipment, recording devices, and laboratory instruments. Tests to be performed may included, ECG, Bio-Z, Holter, Arrhythmia Monitors and stress testing.

Explains testing procedures to patient to obtain cooperation and reduce anxiety.

Obtains and records patient identification, medical history or test results.

Prepares and positions patients for testing.

Attaches electrodes to the patient to obtain a reading.

Observes gauges, and recorder of data analysis system.

Adjusts equipment and controls according to physicians' orders or established protocol.

Monitors patients' comfort and safety during tests, alerting physicians to abnormalities or changes in patient responses.

Prepares reports of diagnostic procedures for interpretation by physician.

Checks, tests, and maintains cardiology equipment, making minor repairs when necessary, to ensure proper operation.

Oversees and trains other technicians.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
