Position Summary | Performs basic phlebotomy procedures and specimen collections appropriately for laboratory testing. Understands and maintains thorough knowledge of test sample priorities and requirements. Responsible for clerical duties necessary to maintain high quality and efficient daily operations of the laboratory. Assists with clinical laboratory functions as needed. | | | |
Education | High school diploma or G.E.D. is required. |
Experience | 1 year of phlebotomy experience is preferred. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Phlebotomy certificate or equivalent is preferred. |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Is knowledgeable of basic specimen collection, collection devices/supplies, and their proper use. | Is knowledgeable regarding specimen test requirements and volumes for laboratory testing. | Demonstrates time management and prioritization of test request such as STAT, timed, and daily. | Demonstrates excellent teamwork, communication, critical thinking, diplomacy, and problem-solving skills. | Demonstrates competency in computer systems and applications required for the role. | Assumes personal responsibility for actions and works independently and as a team. |
Responsibilities | Performs basic phlebotomy procedures and specimen collections using appropriate technique, proper identification, and in compliance with procedures. May perform electrocardiograms, Holter Monitor placement/processing, drug and alcohol testing (Non-DOT and DOT) and laboratory testing with appropriate laboratory regulatory oversight. | Reviews specimen orders to prioritize information, obtains order clarification when necessary, processes and transports specimens correctly, and troubleshoots concerns that arise. | Works closely with a variety of departments to ensure samples are obtained properly, transported, and processed as required. | Responds to emergency situations to performed laboratory collections. Including assisting patients in adverse reactions and ensure proper care is received. | Performs clerical functions including registration of specimens, answering phones, and laboratory quality assurance. | Participates in performance improvement activities |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials. Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues. | Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work. Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care. Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process. Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements. |
