Position Summary

The Manager-Laboratory is responsible for oversight and leadership of high complexity testing for the laboratory sections or department including operations, accreditation, and supervision of the laboratory staff. The Manager-Laboratory assists in the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities; plans and allocates resources to accomplish the work to meet productivity and quality goals; consistently exercise of discretion and judgment to maintain proper service line needs. 


Education

Bachelor’s degree in a chemistry, biology, medical laboratory science or related field is required.

 

Master’s degree in chemistry, biology, medical laboratory science or relevant business field is preferred.

 

Associate’s degree in a laboratory science or equivalent education and training with at least 3 years of experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor’s degree.


Experience

3 years supervisory and/or team lead experience is required.

 

3 years of laboratory experience is required.

 


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist or eligibility for certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency such as:

* American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

* National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)

* American Medical Technologies (AMT)

* Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW)

Or other laboratory certifying agency is required.

 

Applicant must be able to verify that they meet all eligibility requirements, including education, training, and/or experience per ASCP to sit for the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Histotechnician (HT) exam, and successfully pass with pending licensure within 6 months is required.

 

 

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Histotechnologist (HTL), or Cytotechnologist (CT) is preferred.

Responsibilities

Provides oversight of technical and operational programs and administrative activities in the laboratory including quality assurance, safety programs, and policies and procedures.

Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of assigned laboratory area for CAP, Joint Commission, CMS, IDPH, Biosafety, and/or other regulatory reviews. Coordinates and maintains all regulatory binders, logs, and audits.  Understands and complies with safety standards to maintain a safe environment.

Ensure laboratory is reporting timely and accurate patient test results according to policies and procedures to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment of disease.  Coordinates with facilitators on equipment or related resources; monitors environmental risks and quality control of failing resources.

Collaborate with the Administrative and Medical Director to oversee scientific and operational management of the Laboratory.   Coordinates at the Division and System level for laboratory changes within the ministry to continue growth in the organization.

Ability to select and adapt most appropriate methodology and techniques for testing platforms.  Coordinates interdepartmental activities within area of responsibility providing expertise and resources to ensure quality patient results.

Plans and monitors metrics to meet organizational objectives and compliance; assist with preparation of budget documents and reports; participates in account reconciliation and communicating with vendors, sponsors, and customers regarding invoicing.

Recruits, selects, develops, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates performance of employees to retain a diverse workforce; administers and ensures compliance with human resources policies and procedures.

Orients, trains, and develops laboratory colleagues.  Ensures training and compliance of anyone working in the laboratory.   Serves as a resource to students, colleagues, and physicians in area of specialization; works with and school affiliates, academic advisors to clinical internships.

Promotes communication and cooperation with colleagues, visitors, patients, and medical staff; establishes and maintains open communications within the department as well as throughout the ministry.

Is available on-call to respond to inquiries and responsible for assuring that laboratory continue to operate.  This includes staffing, maintaining testing, respond to calls from sections concerning instrumentation failures, IT/LIS failures, and other emergency operations.   Ability to work as a front-line colleague to collect, prepare, perform and testing.

Participates and holds meetings as appropriate to share information.  May include meetings at the division and system level and serve as a project manager.

Continues development in area of expertise and related scientific fields through reading of scientific journals and technical papers; adapts new technology as appropriate to meet changing laboratory needs or improve effectiveness or efficiency.


Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction. 

Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility. 

Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders.
