Position Summary

The Spiritual Care Minister I responds to the healing mission of Jesus and the Franciscan tradition to serve the poor and sick person. The Spiritual Care Minister I participates in meeting the health care and spiritual needs of the community. This role assists patients, families and colleagues in their spiritual and emotional needs during times of illness, injury or stress. This role supports and interacts with all people, regardless of their belief system while being the example of the HSHS mission, core values, vision and strategic plan.


Education

Bachelor’s degree plus designated graduate hours in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity or related field as required per certifying agency requirements. 

Master's degree is preferred.

One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) or Clinical Pastoral Education International (CPEI) Accredited Center is required.

Acquiring additional CPE units within 5 years of hire as indicated by the NACC (National Association of Catholic Chaplains), APC (Association of Professional Chaplains), NAJC (Neshama: Associate of Jewish Chaplains), or CASC (Canadian Association of Spiritual Care) is preferred. 


Experience

In good standing with community and endorsed or eligible for endorsement by faith community is required.

 

Experience working with electronic medical records (EMRs) and proficiency with Microsoft Outlook Suite is required. Must also be comfortable navigating and utilizing a variety of digital applications and communication tools such as Workday, Microsoft Teams, Halo/Clinical Comms, Epic, Zoom, or Webex Video.

3 years of hospital experience in Spiritual Care is preferred.

Experience speaking and presenting to physicians and other clinicians about spiritual care area of specialty is preferred.

The appointment of Catholic priests and Catholic deacons to the Spiritual Care staff of a Catholic institution must have explicit approval or confirmation of the local bishop in collaboration with the administration of HSHS.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Current certification with NACC (National Association of Catholic Chaplains), APC (Association of Professional Chaplains), NAJC (Neshama:  Associate of Jewish Chaplains), or CASC (Canadian Association of Spiritual Care) is preferred within 5 years of hire. 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Possesses knowledge of pastoral theology, medical ethics, spirituality, death and dying, and crisis intervention.

Ability to work in emotional and stressful crisis and trauma environment, while navigating multiple priorities.

Ability to work with little assistance in the context of a strong pastoral team and in cooperation with the interdisciplinary clinical team to provide quality services resulting in high patient satisfaction.

Ability to advocate for patients, family members or co-workers when the need arises, ministering to the whole person with an emphasis on the spiritual.

Ability to support departmental, local/organizational, and ministry-wide goals, objectives and strategic plans.

Ability to foster a spirit of religious freedom and ecumenical climate by promoting an environment where individuals are free to practice their own faith, respect and dialogue among different religious traditions is encouraged and a harmonious coexistence that values diversity and collaboration is encouraged.

Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work activities appropriately; works efficiently with an emphasis on quality and quality improvement.


Responsibilities

Provides spiritual and emotional support by assessing needs, providing follow up, attending care conferences, initiating and responding to referrals and communicating spiritual/diverse needs that impact patient’s plan of care.

Responds to trauma, crisis, and complex critical patients of all ages on a regular basis, effectively managing multiple priorities.

Maintains appropriate records of pastoral services for accountability, productivity and recognition of trends and changing pastoral needs.

Assists with debriefing/supporting staff particularly after a major event.

Plans, implements, and assists in religious and spiritual events that connect faith communities and other community services to HSHS as well as develops specialized spiritual services for specific area of assignment.

Assists visiting clergy via notifying of patient admission/crisis situation at patient request.

Mentors, trains and teaches students/staff about spiritual needs of patients & families and the connection between spirituality & health outcomes.

Pursues personal, spiritual and professional growth, including continuing education requirements for endorsing body by assuming responsibility for self-development through participation in educational and spiritual programs, workshops, and seminars in order to remain current with contemporary thought in the Church, affiliate and medical fields.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Abides by all safety requirements including demonstrating proper hand hygiene and wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. 

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains ongoing communication and collaboration with team members.
