Position Summary | Telemetry Technicians observe telemetry monitors and work collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team to provide safe patient care. Accountable for providing direct and non-direct patient care according to their scope of practice. Understands and reacts effectively to the unique need of all patients. | | | |
Education | High School Diploma or GED is required. |
Experience | 1 year of Telemetry experience is preferred. | 2 years of experience in the medical field is preferred. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. | Certification in cardiac technology by the American Cardiology Association is preferred. | Successfully complete basic EKG training at the first offering and 16 hours of 12-lead EKG training within 3 months of hire is required. |

Responsibilities | Continuously maintain visual contact with the group of assigned cardiac monitors throughout the shift, except during breaks and meal times. | Recognizes emergencies and knows emergency procedures. | Maintains basic knowledge of cardiac rhythms and ability to interpret, inform, and document. | Accurately documents patient’s cardiac rhythms by recording a baseline strip at the beginning of each shift and upon admission of a new patient. | Reports all significant changes in patient’s cardiac rhythms and vital signs (if monitoring) to the registered nurse that the patient is assigned to in a timely manner and per standard work. | Assists in maintaining accurate unit records such as admit log, storyboard, transmitter log, etc. | Is able to place patient on and off monitor according to physician order, and nurse confirmation. | Reports any problems or malfunctions with equipment to the nurse in charge. | Maintains transmitters and checks battery function in between patients. | Keeps all alarms limits set within appropriate parameters. | Understands the functions of all the monitoring equipment and is able to access assistance when such equipment does not appear to be functioning in a normal manner. |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials. Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues. | Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work. Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care. Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process. Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements. |
