Position Summary | Under the direct supervision of the registered pharmacist, and according to state and federal laws, performs a variety of tasks according to policies and procedures. The intermediate-level role requires the colleague to be competent with the responsibilities outlined in the Pharmacy Technician Essential Job Functions along with maintaining proficiency in areas of pharmacy technician specialty practice as outlined by the department requirements. | | | |
Education | High School Diploma or GED is required. | Associates in Healthcare, Business or related field is preferred. | Completion of Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) recognized Educational School/Training Program is preferred. |
Experience | 1 year pharmacy experience is required. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Licensed or registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice is required. IL: May work in a license pending status for up to 60 days. WI: May work in a license pending status until registration is approved. | Certified Pharmacy Technician certification must be achieved within 12 months of hire OR enrolled in a Doctorate of Pharmacy program is required. |

Responsibilities | Demonstrated capability to train and supervise pharmacy technicians. | Understands basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and medical terminology relevant to the role. | Knowledgeable in age specific medication dosing as documented in completion of age-related competencies. | Demonstrated competency in compliance with pharmacy professional standards and relevant legal, regulatory, formulary, contractual and safety requirements. | Assists in bulk compounding of pharmaceuticals and preparation of intravenous medications. | Proficient in mathematical calculations required in sterile and non-sterile compounding to determine patient specific medication dosing. | Efficient in compounding sterile products per USP 797 guidelines with specialized certification as applicable. | Demonstrated knowledge of the safe handling and preparation of chemotherapy agents per NIOSH and USP 800 guidelines. | Apply accepted procedures in purchasing pharmaceuticals and supplies. | Manage drug product inventory stored in equipment or devices used to ensure the safety and accuracy of medication dispensing. | Participate in technical and operational activities to support Registered Pharmacists as assigned. | Assist Registered Pharmacist in the medication reconciliation process. |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials. Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues. | Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work. Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care. Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process. Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements. |
