Position Summary

Under the direction of Nursing leadership, the Assistant Manager-Nursing assists in the oversight of functional area(s) of the unit and/or department including: patient care; hiring; transferring; performance improvement; assigning duties; and rewards. Develops general workflows for department/unit and prepares timely operational reports. Develops and administers proper protocols for department and/or unit. Assists in the direct supervision of unit and staff. Is a champion for patient care. Collaborates with other care team providers to assure team provides excellence in patient care.

 


Education

Graduate from an accredited and approved school of nursing accepted for licensure in the state of practice is required. 

Bachelor’s of science in nursing is preferred.


Experience

2 years staff nurse (RN) in an acute setting is required.

 

2 years experience in a charge nurse, lead nurse, or related position is preferred. 

 


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in state of practice is required. Wisconsin:  RNs may practice with a valid multi-state RN license as outlined in the Nurse Licensure Compact rules.

 

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.

 

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required where necessary.

Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, fiscal planning, budgeting, and reporting.

Ability to maintain leadership effectiveness while focusing on maximizing operational goals and strategic success.

Ability to simultaneously handle multiple priorities.

Strong interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively motivate staff, maintain customer relations with patients as well as key stakeholders (i.e., clinical departments, providers, vendors).


Responsibilities

Assists in direct supervision and oversight of daily operations of the unit and staff.

Assists nursing leadership in coordinating interdepartmental activities within area of responsibility providing expertise and resources to ensure quality patient care

Serves as a front-line resource for physicians and other health care providers relating to patient care in the area of specialty.

Enforces policies and procedures for operations to enhance quality patient care and services

Collaborates with other care team providers to assure team provides excellence in patient care.

Provides hands-on patient care when required to assure patient care needs are met.

Assist manager in creating action, business, and financial plans to achieve unit and/or departmental goals.

Addresses patient and customer needs and responds to patient and customer concerns, identifying ways to improve patient and customer relations.

May lead and participates in unit and /or departmental meetings sharing all required and necessary information to staff and other healthcare providers.

Communicates policies and procedures as directed.

Supports an environment which recognizes and values differences in staff, physicians, patients, and communities.

Engage staff and other care providers in decision making. Supports decisions that are patient centered and supports an environment conducive to opinion sharing.

Builds credibility with physicians as a champion for patient care.

Confronts and addresses or if necessary reports inappropriate behavior towards patients and staff to resolve conflict

Collaborates as needed with medical staff leaders in determining necessary patient care services and developing patient care protocols, performance issues.

Collaborates with nursing management and physicians to determine patient care equipment and facility needs.

Assist the nurse manager in determining current and future staffing needs for nursing care

Identifies educational needs of existing and potential nursing staff and builds rapport with nursing programs to collaborate in evaluating quality of graduating clinicians and develop mechanisms to enhance quality.


Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction. 

Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility. 

Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders.
