Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the registered pharmacist, and according to state and federal laws, performs a variety of tasks according to policies and procedures. The advanced-level role requires the colleague to be experienced with the Essential Job Functions of the Pharmacy Technician (2381 job code) and proficient in the Essential Functions within the Pharmacy Specialist Technician I (2595 job code) position. In addition, the colleague will perform administrative duties in one of the following areas: pharmacy purchasing, pharmacy automation, sterile compounding; or performs advanced technician functions such as validating quality assurance for other technicians.


Education

Illinois:  At least 16 years of age and is attending or graduated from high school or GED equivalency is required. 

Wisconsin:  At least 18 years of age and has graduated from high school or GED equivalency is required or enrolled in an approved youth apprenticeship program approved by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. 


Experience

3 years pharmacy experience is required.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Licensed or registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice is required.

IL: May work in a license pending status for up to 60 days.

WI: May work in a license pending status until registration is approved.

Certified Pharmacy Technician certification must be achieved within 12 months of hire OR enrolled in a Doctorate of Pharmacy program is required.

Responsibilities

Apply supervisory skills related to implementation of pharmacy regulatory policies and procedures.

Demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate with other healthcare professionals, payors and other individuals necessary to serve the needs of patients and practice.

Assist pharmacists in collecting, organizing, and recording demographic and clinical information in compliance with regulatory guidelines and continuous quality improvement processes.

Initiate, verify, and manage the adjudication of billing for complex and/or specialized pharmacy medications and services.

Implement accepted procedures in purchasing pharmaceuticals, devices, and supplies to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.

Completes and audits departmental billing for vendors and interdepartmental charges.

Implements and maintains pharmacy automation components.

Perform administrative duties as assigned in one of the following areas: pharmacy purchasing, pharmacy automation, drug diversion auditing, and sterile compounding.

Perform quality assurance checking for other pharmacy technicians.

Present a leadership image appropriate for the profession of pharmacy in appearance and behavior.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
