Position Summary | The Manager-Surgical Services will be accountable for the overall management and leadership of surgical services, including oversight of the operating room and other departments as assigned within surgical services. Manager may oversee nursing positions, other clinical positions (such as surgical techs) and non-clinical support positions within surgical services. The leader will be responsible for all clinical and operational activities and he/she will ensure the provision of patient care 24 hours a day while assuring compliance with department standards by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the delivery of patient care. The Manager-Surgical Services will conduct rounds to assess appropriate patient assignments, evaluate patient care and patient/family satisfaction. | | | |
Education | Surgical Tech Diploma or associate’s degree in surgical technology is required. | Bachelor’s degree in surgical technology or related field is preferred. |
Experience | 3 years progressively more responsible leadership experience or equivalent is required. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Illinois only– Licensed as a Surgical Technologist is required. | Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is required. | Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Demonstrates effective use of verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills and effectively communicates with staff, physicians, patients, families and vendors. | Ability to maintain personnel and other direct expenses within unit budgetary expectations.Clinically proficient in surgical services skills, demonstrating knowledge of the developmental needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.Knowledgeable of hospital policies and procedures specific to surgical services.Ability to prioritize and manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work.Demonstrates critical thinking and ability to determine appropriate course of action in complex situations.Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.Develops and maintains effective relationships with hospital departments providing support services. | Monitors services provided and collaborates in developing methods to improve utilization and efficiency.Demonstrates clinical knowledge by coordinating care for the surgical patient, acting as a clinical resource to associates and consultant to other departments for surgical services related matters. |
Responsibilities | Develops staffing patterns adjusting to volume and acuity requirements using appropriate benchmarks and standards. | Uses resources appropriately to meet the needs of the department, collaborating within and outside the division.Forecasts personnel needs based on departmental data comparison to benchmarks. | Considers unique needs based on physical layout of area, peak volume periods, necessary skill mix and available cross trained staff. | Modifies operations to meet patient needs during peak volume periods.Monitors data reports such as: daily patient reports, monthly statistics, responsibility report, accounts payable distribution report to make sound decisions about staffing, purchases, and inventory management. | Accountable for variance explanation.Oversees and coordinates the day to day operations of the nursing and surgical tech staff to assure a high level of productivity and customer service for the various surgical service lines. | Oversees/coordinates the daily case schedule with staff, physician offices, and outside departments such as x-ray, to ensure good flow of the daily schedule and resource utilization. | Collaborates work with leadership to delivery of coordinated care with local patient care partners. (Such as Anesthesia, Surgeons, Pharmacy, Service Line leaders, etc.) Communicates organization and department goals to staff and management teams to facilitate team spirit, as reflected in staff meeting minutes, employee feedback, and verbal/nonverbal behavior.Prioritizes workflow based on current patients’ needs and knowledge of in-coming cases. | Utilizes a customer service approach to investigate problems or delays and resolves appropriately. | Develops and implements a patient care model that expedites patient flow and accountability for staff.Provides high quality surgical services at reasonable costs by directing the programs, policies and procedures for all areas of responsibility. | Develops, monitors and ensure implementation of evidence-based clinical standards of nursing practice.Presents proposed program and policy changes to the Surgery Department and Governance Committee as indicated.Provides direction and support for, PI programs and preparation for Joint Commission surveys. | Maintains compliance with Joint Commission standards, (Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Guidelines, and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) recommended Practices requiring accountability from staff. | Establishes & collaborates the procurement and maintenance of surgical equipment and supplies, staffing and training of colleagues to care for patients and accomplish program goals. | Identifies trends in performance problems, which require leadership focus via use of variance reports, identification of risk management issues, concurrent review of medical records. |
