Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the registered pharmacist, and according to state and federal laws, performs a variety of tasks according to policies and procedures. The entry-level role requires the ability to perform mathematical calculations, knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terminology along with an understanding of the pharmacy dispensing responsibilities necessary to comply with state and federal regulations.


Education

High School Diploma or GED is required. 

Completion of Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) recognized Educational School/Training Program is preferred.


Experience

1 year pharmacy experience is preferred.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Licensed or registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice is required. May work in a license pending status for up to 60 days. Wisconsin Pharmacy Technicians seeking registration may work in a pending status until registration is approved.

IL:  Certified Pharmacy Technician achieved within 12 months of hire or enrolled in Doctorate of Pharmacy Program is required.

WI:  Certified Pharmacy Technician achieved within 12 months of hire or enrolled in Doctorate of Pharmacy Program is preferred.

Sufficient understanding of Latin, metric and apothecary terminology routinely utilized in prescriptions.

Knowledge of the generic and trade names, forms, doses and general pharmacologic uses of pharmaceutical products. 


Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, receives, processes and prepares prescriptions/medication orders for completeness and accuracy to ensure patient safety. 

Assists the Registered Pharmacist in the distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation when filling unit dose cassettes and automated dispensing cabinets.

Under the direction of a Registered Pharmacist, prepares non-sterile products through accurate measurement, compounding and dispensing of pharmaceuticals. Performs essential mathematical manipulations including ratio calculations, percent strengths, dilutions and allegations in accurately compounding pharmaceutical formulas. 

Practices in a professional manner including adherence to regulatory policy and procedures along with fostering a respectful attitude when interacting with diverse patient populations, colleagues and professionals.  Communicates clearly and effectively as demonstrated in the ability to triage telephone and electronic messaging questions along with providing pharmaceutical information according to established policies.

Maintains accurate compounding records and pharmacy inspection files per state and federal regulations.  Compliant with United States Pharmacopeia (USP) requirements in maintaining the pharmacy compounding and dispensing areas in a clean and orderly manner. Demonstrates proficient operation of computer software programs and other pharmacy equipment necessary to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care. Demonstrate basic understanding of preparation of sterile compounds.

Prices patient specific medications and complete pharmacy charges as applicable.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
