Position Summary

The Supervisor-Respiratory assists in directing, planning, coordinating all clinical aspects of the Respiratory Therapy Department in such a manner as to assure quality care in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disorders. Serves as part of the healthcare team by establishing an authentic personalized relationship with the patient and their chosen support system, collaborating with physicians and other team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate an individualized plan of care that promotes optimal health. Ability to perform essential functions of a respiratory care practitioner.


Education

Associates degree in respiratory therapy from an Accredited Respiratory Care Education Program is required. 

Bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy from an Accredited Respiratory Care Education Program is preferred. 

Colleagues who meet educational requirements to become Registered by NBRC may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.


Experience

2 years of experience as a respiratory therapist is required.

1 year of demonstrated leadership experience is required. 


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) is required.

In lieu of RRT, candidates with a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) may be considered.

Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of practice is required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is preferred.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is preferred.

Specialty credential through NBRC is preferred (Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS), Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS), Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS), Asthma Educator Specialist (AE-C)  or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT)).

Maintains current working knowledge and is proficient in area of expertise.


Responsibilities

Assists Director/Manager with leadership/organizational functions, including daily operations. Assumes responsibilities of the Director/Manager in his/her absence.

Supervises and coordinates staff and activities of the department to assure that colleagues receive appropriate direction and that treatments given to patients are of the highest possible quality. 

Adjusts staffing to handle workload.  Creates work schedules and handle PTO requests.

Performs direct patient care as a respiratory therapist as needed. May work in staff level capacity up to 15% of the time. 

Keeps abreast of innovations in the field of Respiratory Care to promote professional self-development, recommend implementation of new treatments and procedures, and assure that department staff and students of professional programs are well informed and trained in performing new treatments and procedures.

Assists with coordination of orientation, training, and competency assessment of colleagues.

Participates in patient/family education as appropriate to position responsibilities.

Participates in the writing, reviewing, and updating of the department policies and procedures.


Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction. 

Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility. 

Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders.
