Position Summary

The Pharmacy Extern role is designed to offer pharmacy students a variety of challenging clinical experiences over the course of their pharmacy school training.  Pharmacy students are eligible to take on additional levels of clinical responsibility as they advance through school. The Pharmacy Extern will have the opportunity to apply knowledge learned in the classroom, develop clinical skills, and enhance project management, time management, and leadership skills.

 


Education

Current acceptance or enrollment in an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program is required.

A Graduate from within the previous 1 year of an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program or a Graduate from an accredited foreign Doctor of Pharmacy program requiring hours for licensure could also be considered eligible.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. 

Registration or licensure as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy intern if required by state law.

Responsibilities

Assists the pharmacist by performing a variety of distribution, technical, and clerical duties.

Receives and interprets medication/prescription orders and enters them into the pharmacy computer system.

Interviews patients to obtain medication histories. Counsels’ patients on medications and responds to their questions and concerns under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

Assists in bulk compounding of pharmaceuticals and preparation of intravenous medications.

Proficiently completes mathematical calculations required in sterile and non-sterile compounding to determine patient specific medication dosing.  Efficiently compounds sterile products per USP 797 guidelines with specialized certification as applicable.

Knowledgeable in age specific medication dosing as documented in completion of age-related competencies.

Performs medication and prescription billing activities.

Performs duties related to medication ordering, receipt, stocking and inventory control.

Demonstrates competency in compliance with pharmacy professional standards and relevant legal, regulatory, formulary, contractual and safety requirements.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
