Position Summary

The Supervisor-Mission Integration & Spiritual Care will assist, in collaboration with the System Manager of Mission and Spiritual Care, in leading the Market in the areas of Mission and Spiritual Care; promoting spiritual programs and activities that support HSHS mission, core values, Catholic identity, and strategic goals. This position works collaboratively with leaders, colleagues, volunteers, patients/families as HSHS advances its strategic plan toward better health by addressing our human potential, nurturing physician alignment, expanding our site of care transformation and achieving a unified organization.


Education

Bachelor’s degree in theology, scripture, spirituality or related field is required. 

Master’s degree in theology, scripture, spirituality, or related field is preferred.

Minimum of (1) unit of clinical pastoral education (CPE) at an Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), College of Pastoral Supervision & Psychotherapy (CPSP), or Clinical Pastoral Education International (CPEI) Accredited Center is required.

Must obtain within 1 year of hire if candidate does not already have 1 CPE from an accredited ACPE program.

2-4 units of CPE is preferred.


Experience

3 years of experience working with Catholic Health Care, Mission or Spiritual Care or related experience is required. 

Must be a member in good standing within a faith community.

At least one year of progressively more responsible leadership experience is required.

Experience working with electronic medical records (EMRs) and proficiency with Microsoft Outlook Suite is required. Must also be comfortable navigating and utilizing a variety of digital applications and communication tools such as Workday, Microsoft Teams, Halo/Clinical Comms, Epic, Zoom, or Webex Video.

2 year of chaplaincy experience within a health care setting is preferred.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Certification with National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) or Canadian Association of Spiritual Care (CASC) is required.  May be obtained within five (5) years of hire if not already certified.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong understanding of the Catholic Church and its teachings.

Knowledge of the Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) for Catholic Healthcare Services.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Ability to work independently as well as within a team setting.

Possesses a significant understanding of the issues surrounding anticipatory, concurrent, and compounding grief/loss issues.

Strong problem-solving and customer service skills.  Ability to quickly troubleshoot and resolve issues.

Ability to prioritize and address mission/spiritual care issues, advocate for change and implement processes for ongoing improvement.


Responsibilities

In partnership with System Manager Mission Integration and Spiritual Care, identifies opportunities for quality improvement and works to effectively implement/communicate changes.

Manages Spiritual Care Ministers ensuring on site, call, tele-chaplaincy coverage 24x7.

Assist with recruitment, training of new spiritual care ministers, contingent priests and spiritual care volunteers within the hospitals.

Promotes a ministry environment by advancing diversity and health equity.

Works to maximize quality spiritual care services benchmarking against industry standards and competencies.

Assists with peer review of electronic medical record documentation and provides constructive feedback related to opportunities for improvement and opportunities to celebrate quality documentation.

Provides spiritual support to patients, families, colleagues who may be experiencing duress/spiritual distress, and where appropriate, provides critical incident stress management for colleagues directly in crisis.

Facilitates and engages in education related to subject matter expertise e.g. ERDs, grief/loss, spiritual health, etc.

Facilitates effective Market Mission Committee and Spiritual Care department meetings.

Ensures a vibrant sacred environment with chapel activities.

Provides appropriate spiritual assessment, interventions inpatient, ambulatory settings.

Welcomes community clergy and collaborates with clergy as they minister within the hospital.

Keeps current on trends in Catholic health care, spiritual care, liturgy/prayer services/ritual, and mission integration.

Travels to ministry sites within the Market fostering interdisciplinary team collaboration.

Assists in implementing Mission activities throughout the Market consistent with strategic goals/initiatives.

Plans creative morale building events that fosters and grows our mission, deepens our commitment to our values and encourages a positive culture, supports colleague engagement/retention, and helps connect to meaningful work.

Raises values questions and justice issues in employee relations, advocates for and highlights the needs of those who are poor and vulnerable.

Performs spiritual care minister duties and on call as needed to support ministry and staff needs.


Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction. 

Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility. 

Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders.
