Position Summary | Provides practical work experience for nursing students in an environment that emphasizes patient-centered care. The Nurse Intern role provides a mechanism for exposing nursing students to innovating and emerging concepts in healthcare practice. Provides mentoring opportunities for staff to facilitate development of teaching and preceptor skills and provides a challenging/stimulating work environment for staff. | | | |
Education | Nursing student currently enrolled in an accredited ADN, BSN or MSN program, or graduated with ADN or BSN within the previous 1 year. Student must have successfully completed at least one clinical rotation. |
Experience | Successfully completed at least one medical-surgical clinical rotation. |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. |

Responsibilities | Under supervision of an RN preceptor, will perform the following skills: vital signs, ADLs, I&O, safety and mobility measures, hygiene, pain assessment, patient care assessment, insertion and removal of urinary catheter, starting and discontinuing peripheral IVs, checking NG placement, and simple wound care. | Performs patient care activities as assigned by the supervising staff according to established procedures. | Documents appropriate information accurately in the patient record with Nurse co-sign. | Reports any observed patient condition or behavior changes to the preceptor or manager | Establishes good rapport with health care team, patients, and visitors as appropriate. |
Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed. Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate. | Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable. Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials. Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. | Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality. Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline. Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues. | Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work. Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care. Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process. Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements. |
