Position Summary | The System Manager-Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) is responsible for providing reliable operation and protection of the Clinical Laboratory Information Systems (including interfaces to hospital systems, laboratory instruments, robotic processing systems, reference laboratories, Epic and peripheral equipment) and the Pathology Information System which are necessary to provide safe, secure, quality information management that meets patient, caregiver, institutional and department needs. Expectation for this role is to serve as both a business leader and a technologist with a vision for how IT can enable productivity and efficiency for the enterprise. | | | |
Education | Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Information Systems, Healthcare or other laboratory science related field is required. | High School Diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of relevant experience in information technology, healthcare, or management related fields may be considered in lieu of degree. |
Experience | 5 years of information technology or healthcare experience, with a focus in clinical laboratory experience is required. (This experience level is required in addition to the experience that would be required in lieu of education if colleague does not meet bachelor’s degree requirement). | Three (3) years of progressively responsible leadership experience is required. | |
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations | Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) certification is preferred. | Epic certification in Epic Beaker or Bridges is preferred. |

Responsibilities | Coaches direct reports and team members to provide high quality technology solutions and support services. Ensures team is structured to effectively deliver value via high quality solutions. Continuously evaluates staff and creates a go forward organizational strategy. Monitors LIS team’s daily operations including hardware, software and operating systems. | Manages LIS team’s resource capacity while supporting organization’s critical IT project and support needs. Oversees the procurement, installation, and tests up-to-date hardware, operating systems, software versions, and program features/modules in order to give the laboratory a technological edge for streamlined workflow. | Works closely with leadership to coordinate the implementation and support of information systems. Collaborates with leadership in creating 1–5-year roadmap and timing of implementation of the roadmap based on business requirements and strategy and budgetary allowances. Participates in workgroups with other IT, hospital, & lab management to develop effective workflows between LIS systems & other institutional computing systems. | Remains up to date with advances in healthcare technology and industry best practice by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, and participating in professional societies. | Organizes, directs and participates in the execution of system analysis, design and programming tasks performed by analysts on the LIS team. | Interacts with LIS leadership and colleagues at the local entities regarding various needs and projects. | Assists with project management and provides project coordination, support, analysis and training for computing needs and projects, utilizing skills/knowledge of LIS staff to build, test, & provide training on new hardware, software, or functionality. | Manages 24X7 operation of Laboratory Information Systems ensuring Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met. Escalates items lacking appropriate attention including projects, issues, vendor and/or operational challenges. | Identifies and bridges gaps between system processes and existing solutions. | Works with operational lab stakeholders to improve business processes, identify redundancies, and promote standardization across the organization. | Regularly communicates with LIS resources on issues, operational needs, upcoming releases, weekly meetings and new opportunities. | Identifies products, projects or services that align with system strategic priorities and initiatives. Manages vendor and partner relationships. Develops and implements policies, procedures, documentation, technical key performance indicators (KPIs) and service level agreements (SLAs) for LIS services. | Accountable for ensuring all applications within their product line are delivered, maintained and compliant with both internal and external regulations. Ensuring legal and regulatory compliance of all information systems. |
