Position Summary

The MRI Tech Assistant provides assistance to the MRI Steering Technologist, Radiologists and/or radiology/imaging department staff to ensure optimal MRI safety and patient care. Performs multiple complex patient support functions while assisting technologists with imaging procedures in accordance with physician' orders and the policies and procedures established by the hospital and other governing bodies.


Education

High School Diploma or GED is required.

Associates degree or actively enrolled in a radiologic technology or related clinical program is preferred.


Experience

1 year of experience in healthcare and/or medical setting is required.

Responsibilities

Maintain the patient’s comfort and safety. Collaborate with patients, families and/or staff in handling and resolving any problems that may arise during the visit.

Prepare patients for imaging procedures, including providing an explanation of the exam, pre-screening for applicable test/exam, and assisting the patient on and off the exam table.

Perform Point of Care (POC) testing on patients, maintain POC equipment and supplies, and maintain equipment/controls.

Assist the technologist in positioning patients for each exam.

Assist with the preparation of barium and IV solutions for administration to patients.

May start and discontinue IVs per policy.

Assist the technologist and radiologists in the performance of imaging procedures.

Process images and make them available for the technologist or physician.

Work with the radiology technologist and the quality control technologist by reporting any machine problems or errors.

Ensure accurate and timely completeness of the patient medical record.

May perform unit/department specific duties and expectations, including but not limited to cleaning radiographic and other related equipment, maintaining/ordering supplies, and transporting patients throughout radiology department and/or hospital.

May perform tech assist duties for other imaging modalities (including but not limited to x-ray, CT, ultrasound) as department staffing requires.


Possess the information, skill, and understanding of the work to be performed.  Actively participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains certifications, licensure as appropriate.

Reduces the risk of healthcare acquired infections through compliance with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines and facility policies including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), if applicable.  Utilizes standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.  Demonstrates compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

Complies with all standards, policies and procedures including dress code, attendance and punctuality.  Attends required in-services and meetings and completes all mandatory competencies by deadline.  Commits to keeping all patient, student or colleague information confidential and maintains excellent interpersonal communication with the health care team colleagues.

Emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care-attending to body, mind, and spirit while upholding ethical principles with patient care and all other aspects of work.  Actively involves the patient and family in decisions about care.  Promotes quality care by participating in organizational councils/committees and/or support of related process.  Documents services provided to patients in the electronic medical record in accordance with policy and requirements.
