Position Summary

The Vice President-Market Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will plan and direct the financial operations and proper application of accounting principles, practices, and procedures, for all financial activities of the market operations. The CFO is responsible for the monitoring of financial performance and the maintenance of reasonable and appropriate financial plans and forecasts. The CFO is a key financial liaison to the executives of market and is responsible for supporting the operational leaders in operating the ministries as effectively and efficiently as possible from a financial standpoint. The CFO communicates on a regular basis with an array of internal and external constituents to include senior leadership of the market and corporate office and various regulatory bodies, along with local boards. The Chief Financial Officer is a key member of the market executive team and, as such, participates in establishing and implementing strategic business plans for the market and aligning operations and strategy within the market with overall Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) strategies and goals.


Education

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field from an accredited college or university is required.

Master’s degree in finance, business, health care administration, or related field is preferred.


Experience

Ten (10) or more years of accounting and/or finance experience is required; four (4) out of the ten (10) years must be in a hospital system or hospital market setting. 

Prior experience within a hospital system or hospital market setting as a CFO or Assistant CFO is strongly preferred.

Five (5) or more years of formal leadership experience is required.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong technical accounting and finance skills; demonstrates the ability to problem solve and think both creatively and analytically.

Knowledge of financial management, analysis, principles and techniques and managerial skills; ability to handle stressful and dynamic work situations while contributing to a team environment.

Expert knowledge in the use of software packages such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Access Windows, and computer- based accounting package; strong knowledge of computer systems and software applications.

Possess strong computer and analytical abilities; Possess excellent communication skills both verbal and written; Demonstrated ability to relate well to others in a variety of functional areas.

Ability to travel to multiple locations, including all market location; ability to work extended hours to meet deadlines and resolve problems.

Demonstrates the ability to relate well with all customers, peers, and management; ability to train users effectively; ability to prepare presentations for distribution to the Board, Executive, and Management staff as requested.

Ability to prioritize and organize to maximize quality, value, and service; able to prioritize and meet deadlines; ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously; highly motivated and able to take initiative; mature approach to problem solving for all types of issues.


Responsibilities

Regularly attend market operational meetings and actively participate in supporting their customers in improving overall operational performance. Represent Finance in local market board and executive meetings as applicable.

Support the finance department in improving processes as well as leading and mentoring associates.

Support the operational market leadership in working through operational performance and strategic plans which align with overall HSHS operational and strategic goals.

Assist with development and maintenance of financial policies and procedures.

Develop financial plans to support leadership of the market. This includes financial budgets and forecasts, revenue projections, expense analysis, and financial operations. Prepare necessary supporting documentation and justification.

Ensure that the financial operations of the market are carried out in an ethical, responsible manner.

Analyze daily operating results to ensure that revenues and expenses within operational and forecasted objectives; advise department heads and market leadership of needed changes and improvements, to include assisting with applicable mitigation plans, in a timely manner.

Direct the analysis and interpretation of market financial information; supporting the completion of strong business plans and analytical documents for the development of programs, services, processes, and infrastructure; forecasting critical milestones.

Assume a lead role in analyzing and exploring means of reducing hospital operating costs and increasing revenues based on knowledge of market trends, financial reports and operating procedures.

Directing the preparation of internal financial reports and ensuring that the reports reliably reflect the financial position of the market.

Compile financial reports in the areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present and expected operations. Reviews and approves related balance sheets.

Leads market financial planning including annual budget and capital planning processes and market long-range planning and forecasting.

Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and directives from regulatory agencies and third-party payers.

Complete timely reviews of the market financial status and progress in its various programs and activities.

Identifying and reporting undesirable trends and potential business opportunities and making recommendations for action.

Forecast the impact of business decisions and expected outcomes on all financial results.

Assist in the development of new business by analyzing the feasibility of new programs.

Collaborate with HSHS and market leadership to accurately complete operational forecasts as well as capital budgets. This includes supporting various ROI, proforma, and other analytic requests needed to prepare accurate projections.

Management of all finance related data and the preparation of reports, which summarize and forecast market financial activity.

Direct the financial activities by establishing and /or recommending to HSHS and Market leadership financial and strategic strategies, objectives, and policies.

Evaluate the markets overall financial position and prepare periodic financial and operating reports. Provide consistent and accurate financial, accounting and reporting processes throughout the market.

Coordinate with other executive leaders of HSHS and market leadership teams in the development of major strategic and financial plans.

Remain current on all healthcare regulations and standards as it relates to finance.

Communicate financial operational performance with all stakeholders, including leadership, appropriate facility staff members and the HSHS corporate office.

Ensure timely and appropriate responses to requests for information and support.

Coordinate financial information between the various markets and HSHS and the executive management.

Support the market leadership teams with financial decisions and projects with financial implications.


Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction. 

Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility. 

Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders.
