Position Summary | The System Director-Mission Programs & Ethics is responsible for promoting the Catholic identity, mission, and core values of the organization through Mission and Ethics programs. The System Director brings best practices, innovative ideas and tactical skills that will support the creation of new efforts and the refinement of existing activities. This role works collaboratively with other leaders, clinicians, and staff to ensure the delivery of compassionate, ethical, mission-driven care and the development of a culture rooted in compassion, justice, and human dignity. | | | |
Education | Master's degree in Theology, Ethics or related field is required; PhD(c), PhD, and/or HEC-C are preferred. | Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience in working in Catholic health care in mission and/or ethics may be considered in lieu of a Master's degree. |
Experience | 5 years of relevant work experience in ethics and mission are required. | 2 years of experience working in Catholic healthcare is required. | 3 years of leadership experience is required. |

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Expert knowledge of Catholic theology, well formed in the Catholic tradition, and living a practical and integrated spirituality. | Expert knowledge in clinical ethics. | Expert facilitation and presentation skills. | Strong planning and organizational skills that enable success in managing complex programming with many pieces. | Working knowledge or willingness to grow skills in teaching and in ministry formation. | Excellent collaboration skills, especially on matters pertaining to evaluation and measurement of programs. | Excellent teamwork skills and ability to lead and influence complex settings marked by religious, cultural, and workplace diversity. |
Responsibilities | Collaborates with other leaders in mission and ethics to establish annual mission and ethics strategic plan. | Leads the Ministry Identity Assessment every three years and provides structured leadership and project management for the 2-year action plan between assessments. | Provides daily leadership within the Ethics Program, including facilitating ethics consultation; overseeing all consultations to ensure high quality; tracking trends and learnings from ethics consultation to advance proactive strategies that improve clinical care; providing expertise in interpreting the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (ERDs). | Organizes the Ethics Coordinating Council and Ethics Committee. | Delivers all Ethics education across HSHS, including formal training for Ethics First Responders and in real time education for First Responders who provide leadership within ethics consultation; advances physician education strategies. | Ensures that clinical services offered within HSHS facilities aligns with the ERDs. | Partners with clinical leadership to further a unified approach to driving increased completion of advance directives. | Ensures that values and ethical commitments are reflected in policies and procedures. | Collaborates to ensure successful implementation of Leader Formation Program and the HSHS pilgrimage to Italy and Germany. | Leads the design of evaluation and assessment for all mission and ethics programming. | Seeks partnership and feedback on opportunities to integrate and align programming with other relevant departments, such as organizational development courses and HR leader training. |
Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction. | Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility. | Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders. |
