Position Summary

This position leads financial planning, budgeting, and resource management for St. John's College of Nursing, ensuring fiscal integrity, regulatory compliance, and alignment with institutional priorities. Responsibilities include overseeing financial operations, reporting, audit coordination, and supporting accreditation and regulatory requirements. The Director advises the Chancellor and leadership team to advance strategic decision-making and sustain the College's long-term financial health in a dynamic academic and healthcare setting.


Education

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, higher education administration, or a related field is required.

Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, higher education administration, or a related field is preferred.


Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in finance, accounting, budgeting, or financial operations is required.

Experience in higher education, health care, nonprofit, or similarly regulated environments is preferred, including experience with budgeting, audit coordination, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance. Experience supporting senior leadership, preparing executive- or board-level financial reports, and contributing to strategic financial planning is preferred.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent professional certification is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of higher education finance, budgeting, fund accounting, and sponsored research administration.

Demonstrated skill in financial planning, forecasting, variance analysis, and executive reporting.

Ability to lead complex financial operations supporting academic, research, and clinical programs.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide strategic recommendations.

Proven ability to build collaborative relationships with faculty, administrators, and external stakeholders while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Experience supervising finance personnel and implementing process improvements that enhance operational efficiency and fiscal accountability.


Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and administration of the College's annual operating and capital budgets. Partner with the Chancellor and institutional leadership to align financial planning with enrollment projections, academic initiatives, strategic priorities, and organizational goals. Monitor budget performance through ongoing financial analysis, forecasting, and variance reporting, and recommend corrective actions to ensure responsible stewardship of institutional resources.

Direct the preparation and presentation of accurate, timely, and meaningful financial statements, reports, dashboards, forecasts, and performance metrics for the Chancellor, executive leadership, governing board, and other stakeholders. Analyze financial trends, assess organizational performance, identify opportunities and risks, and provide data-driven recommendations that support strategic decision-making and long-term financial sustainability.

Lead the coordination of annual financial audits, including preparation of schedules, supporting documentation, and responses to external auditors. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable nonprofit accounting standards, accreditation requirements, federal financial responsibility regulations, internal control standards, and institutional policies. Oversee the preparation and submission of required financial reports and regulatory filings, including IRS Form 990 and other applicable federal, state, and institutional reporting requirements.

Develop, implement, and continuously improve financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and business processes that promote fiscal integrity, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, risk mitigation, and continuity of operations. Ensure financial practices reflect industry best practices and support the College's long-term sustainability.

Provide oversight of institutional revenue processes, including tuition revenue, student accounts, and related financial operations. Collaborate with the Bursar, Financial Aid, Enrollment Management, and other institutional partners to ensure accurate billing, revenue recognition, account reconciliation, regulatory compliance, and exceptional service to students.

Oversee institutional cash management activities, including cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, investment monitoring as applicable, account reconciliations, and financial controls that safeguard College assets and support fiscal stability and liquidity.

Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the Chancellor and executive leadership by providing strategic financial analysis and guidance related to enrollment trends, new academic and program initiatives, capital investments, resource allocation, and long-range financial planning. Support institutional decision-making by evaluating the financial impact of strategic initiatives and identifying opportunities to strengthen financial performance.

Foster collaborative relationships across academic and administrative departments to support effective financial planning, contract administration, grant and program management, and institutional resource allocation. Coordinate with external partners, auditors, vendors, and affiliated organizations—including Hospital Sisters Health System, as applicable—to promote integrated financial operations and advance institutional objectives.


Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction. 

Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility. 

Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders.
